Honzovy Buns – A Sweet Taste of Czech Autumn 🍂🍵

Autumn in Czechia is full of charm. Colorful leaves rustle under your feet, the air smells of wood smoke, and kitchens are filled with the aroma of freshly baked buns. In the past, grandmothers used to simmer plums for hours to make thick, dark povidla (plum jam). And nothing made yeast buns taste better than that sweet filling.

But today, you don’t need a plum orchard to enjoy this tradition. Hamé Plum Jam brings you the same nostalgic taste – thick, aromatic, made in the traditional way, and always ready when you need it.

Why are they called Honzovy Buns?

In almost every Czech fairy tale, there is a simple but kind-hearted young man named Honza. When he set out “into the world,” his mother always packed him a bundle of sweet buns. That’s why they are still called Honzovy buchty – a symbol of home, love, and a sweet beginning to every journey.

Recipe: Traditional Honzovy Buns 🥯

Ingredients (about 30 pcs):

30 g yeast
60 g powdered sugar
230–250 ml milk
500 g Semi-Coarse Wheat Flour
pinch of salt
1 packet vanilla sugar
3 egg yolks
100 g butter (50 g for dough + 50 g for brushing)
Hamé Plum Jam for filling

Instructions:

1. Make yeast starter with yeast, milk, and sugar.
2. Mix flour, sugar, vanilla sugar, yolks, milk, and starter. Add butter and knead smooth dough. Let rise for 30–40 min.
3. Roll out, cut into 30 squares, add a spoonful of Hamé Plum Jam, fold into buns.
4. Place in tray, brush with butter, let rise for 20 min.
5. Bake at 190 °C for 20–25 min. Dust with sugar.
