From the Metro to Spartakiad: Metro Dessert is an ultra-sweet Czech retro legend 🍰🚇

Some sweets are more than “something with coffee.”
They are tiny time capsules. One bite and you’re back - in a small shop, at your grandma’s table, or at a huge event where sweets felt like a reward.

That’s exactly what Metro Dessert is. For older generations, it’s pure nostalgia. Many younger people don’t even know it. What surprises most, though, is this: Metro is still made today - and it still has that unmistakable, no-compromise sweetness.

What does it have to do with the Metro?

Metro Dessert was created in 1974 to celebrate the opening of Prague’s first Metro line C. And the detail that ties it all together - the first Prague metro trains ran with only four carriages, so the dessert was shaped like small bars and traditionally packed in sets of four.

It’s one of those charming “of its time” ideas: a sweet treat made to celebrate a public transport milestone.

How a novelty became a legend

The production methods and lines were taken from the Netherlands. A year later, Metro began to be produced at the Michelská bakery in Prague, where it became a real success.

Besides the classic version, other flavors appeared too: orange, coconut, gingerbread, cocoa, or mint. After the Velvet Revolution, production stopped for a while, but a few years later it returned with new packaging. Even the name changed - it used to be simply Metro, today it’s Metro Dessert. What never changed is the most important thing: the production technology and its retro character.

A fun fact many people remember

Demand was so huge that deliveries had to be planned months in advance. Metro Dessert was especially popular at mass events like Spartakiad, where it became a true sweet phenomenon.

What Metro is made of - and why it’s so addictive

Metro Dessert is sweet in the most classic way:
- sponge cake
- vanilla cream
- a white fondant coating
- and dark fat-based chocolate coating on both ends

The classic version is the iconic one, but you can also find varieties such as egg liqueur flavor.

Who will love it most

- Czech retro lovers
- anyone curious to taste “how people snacked back then”
- moments when you want something truly sweet and iconic
