Homemade Rohlíky Just Like from a Czech Bakery: The Iconic Bread Roll You’ll Love

Homemade Rohlíky Just Like from a Czech Bakery: The Iconic Bread Roll You’ll Love

When people talk about the Czech Republic and its baked goods, the first thing that often comes to mind is the rohlík – a beautifully golden, crispy-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside bread roll. As one of the most iconic Czech pastries, rohlíky have earned a special place at every Czech dining table. And now, you can easily bake them at home to enjoy their fresh aroma and authentic taste!

Why Rohlíky Are the Symbol of Czech Baking
Rich Tradition: Rohlíky have been a staple in Czech bakeries for generations, making them an integral part of everyday Czech life.

Versatile Uses: Enjoy them sweet or savory – with butter and jam, cheese, ham, or simply plain.

Quick and Easy: Although rohlíky have a long history, the recipe is straightforward enough for any home baker.

Quality Ingredients: At Czechia Food, you can find authentic Czech flour, fresh yeast, and other essentials for perfect rohlíky wherever you live.

Recipe for Fragrant, Fluffy Rohlíky
Ingredients (for 10–14 rolls)
500 g (about 4 cups) all-purpose flour
60 g (about 1/2 stick) softened butter
250–270 ml lukewarm water
1 teaspoon sugar
2 level teaspoons salt
10 g fresh yeast (or equivalent dry yeast)
For brushing and topping:
1 egg
a splash of milk
poppy seeds (or sesame seeds, coarse salt, caraway seeds—any topping you like)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the Yeast Mixture:

Place the flour in a large mixing bowl and sprinkle the salt around the edge.
Make a well in the center and pour in the lukewarm water mixed with the sugar.
Crumble in the fresh yeast and let it rest for a few minutes until it begins to bubble slightly.

2. Knead the Dough:

Add the softened butter to the mixture.
Knead the dough thoroughly until it becomes elastic and no longer sticks to the sides of the bowl.
Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and allow the dough to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour.

3. Shape the Rolls:

Transfer the risen dough to a floured work surface.
Divide it into 10–14 equal pieces.
Roll each piece into a triangular or “tear-drop” shape.
Starting at the widest end, roll the dough toward the tip to form the rohlík shape.
Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, seam-side down to help them keep their shape.

4. Second Rise and Egg Wash

Let the shaped rolls rise for another 20–30 minutes.
Meanwhile, whisk the egg with a little milk.
Once the rolls have risen, gently brush them with the egg wash and sprinkle with poppy seeds (or your favorite topping).

5. Bake to Perfection

Preheat your oven to 220°C (428°F).
Bake the rolls for 12–17 minutes, until they turn golden and crispy.
Allow them to cool slightly (if you can resist!) before serving.
